We are pleased to be supporting the national Every Day Is Different campaign from the Department of Health and Social Care which aims to drive a new generation of people to consider and apply for a job in adult social care.

Here at CHS we know how rewarding a career in social care can be – every day our carers do a varied and worthwhile job that makes a real difference to our residents.  This is clearly demonstrated on our video of Tyrone who works at one of our care homes, Alex Wood House in Cambridge.

One of our other care assistants shares with us their thoughts on their role in adult social care: “I wanted to be a nurse all through my childhood.  I didn’t get on the college course I wanted because there were too many applicants so I took a catering course instead.  It has always been a niggle that I didn’t do nursing so I decided to try care work and I started my job here at Alex Wood House Cambridge in August 2018.

“The best part of my job is doing activities with the residents.  We have a singing activity on a Friday morning which they enjoy.  The residents remember the old songs and sing along.  Even residents with dementia who can no longer hold a conversation are able to sing the words, it’s quite amazing.  It’s all about the here and now and making them happy at that moment.  Then you feel you have done your job properly and get a lot of job satisfaction.

“The hardest part of my job is knowing that dementia is making the residents gradually lose and forget their skills.    They get frustrated and this can reflect in their behaviour.  It’s very hard knowing they are not going to get any better and are still declining.  It’s also hard seeing the residents’ close families trying to cope when they thought they would be spending their retirement years together enjoying life and now their lives have been changed completely.

“Care work is a hard job but with the right team, can be one of the most rewarding things you could ever do.  I am a complete beginner but have now completed my care certificate and have been on lots of training courses all offered by CHS.  It’s all about making a difference to these people’s lives and keeping them safe for their families.”
