Housing and Care for Older People

CHS Group recognises that as people get older they often want a home that is more manageable and provides security, support and peace of mind to the individual and their family.

We offer:

  • Housing With Care
  • Care Homes
  • Sheltered (Retirement) Housing
  • Local Community Care

Providing care and support for older people is at the heart of what we do. CHS delivers a high standard of rented social housing (and residential care beds) in well maintained, attractive settings. We also offer the skills of our experienced housing officers to support you through your tenancy, and if necessary, we have highly trained teams of carers who can help you stay independent for as long as possible.

What are Care Homes?

CHS operates Residential Care Homes offering 24 hour personal care and support for those who are no longer able to care for themselves for whatever reason. We are able to care for those living with dementia or other mental health needs; however we do not provide nursing care.

What is Housing with Care?

Housing with care gives those over 65 the security of a 1 or 2 bedroom rented apartment under a tenancy with CHS Group, restaurant facilities and a trained care team on site. To live in a housing with care home you must also have a care need, which has been assessed by the adult social care team. If you already have care visits at home, this means you could qualify. If you are applying as a couple, you must both be over 65, but only one of you needs to meet the care criteria.

What Local Community Services are offered?

CHS Homecare (our domiciliary care agency) offers home visits within a 2 to 3 mile radius of our housing with care schemes. We can help with personal care such as showering, dressing, housekeeping, shopping or helping you get out and about. The service is designed to make life a little easier for you or your loved ones.

What is Sheltered (Retirement) Housing?

Our sheltered housing consists of self-contained 1 or 2 bedroom apartments on quiet sites in Cambridge and Milton. These schemes have communal facilities such as a lounge area and community alarm service, as well as secure door entry. This housing is open to those over 55 years of age whether working or retired.

Care Quality Commission Reports

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of health and social care in England.

CQC regulate care provided by the NHS, local authorities, care agencies and voluntary organisations. CQC aims to make sure better care is provided for everyone – in hospitals, care homes and people’s own homes. CQC also seek to protect the interests of people whose rights are restricted under the Mental Health Act.

Under the requirements of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 CHS is registered with the Care Quality Commission as a provider of adult social care services. This registration includes our three registered care homes, Alex Wood House, Langdon House, Vera James House, and our Domiciliary Care Agency – CHS Homecare.

More information about the work of the Commission can be found on the CQC website or by contacting the national contact centre on 03000 616161.
